Feeling Scared About Solo Parenthood Doesn’t Mean It’s the Wrong Decision

by | May 18, 2026 | Decision Making

Nobody tells couples they need to feel completely certain before they decide to have a baby. There’s no checklist. No moment where they finally tick every box and think, right, I’m ready now.

Society has spent so long framing parenthood within a relationship as the natural next step that most couples simply move forward when it feels roughly right, trusting they’ll figure it out as they go. Because most people do. Because the path is familiar. Well worn.

We don’t always get that same luxury.

When you’re considering solo parenthood, the decision sits squarely with you. There’s no one to share the weight of it with, no partner to reassure you on the days you’re feeling unsure.

So most of us go deep in the consideration phase. We think about finances, timelines, fertility, support networks. We run every scenario. We ask ourselves the hard questions from every angle. We analyse in ways many couples never have to, because our path requires it.

And then we wonder why we feel uncertain.

The back and forth is not a warning sign.

Here’s what I really want to share: feeling scared does not mean you’re making the wrong decision.

Feeling conflicted, emotional, unsure, or overwhelmed does not mean solo parenthood isn’t for you.

More often than not, it simply means the decision matters deeply to you. That you’re taking it seriously. That you’re not rushing something that will shape your entire life.

Confidence and doubt are not opposites. They sit side by side each other. You can feel excitement about the life you’re imagining and still have moments of doubt. Both can be true at the same time.

What you’re actually looking for

Most of us, when we’re feeling a sense of uncertainty, aren’t really looking for certainty. We’re looking for self trust.

That belief that whatever happens, we’ll handle it. That we’re resourceful enough, resilient enough, and supported enough to make this work.

That kind of trust doesn’t come from having every answer in advance. It comes from knowing yourself. From learning to separate the fears that need practical solutions from the ones that simply need time, space, and compassion.

It comes from asking yourself: Beneath the fear, what is it I really want? What kind of life am I actually trying to create? What do I already know about who I am and what I am capable of?

And sometimes it comes from finding people who understand. Hearing from women who stood exactly where you’re standing now and who can tell you, honestly, what it looks like in reality.

You don’t have to figure this out alone

Uncertainty is not a sign to stop. It’s an invitation to get support.
